The EPIC Pattern of a true Scholar includes the following:

E - EXPOSURE
Brain Function #1 - Gather Information
  • It ignites your child's interest and sets him on the path of discovery.
  • It comes through the senses via Experiences and Example.

 P - PATTERNs
Brain Function #2 - Make Meaning of Information
  • Your child's brain sorts new information into both familiar and new patterns.
  • The patterns made meaning of the information and behavior to which she is exposed.

  I - INQUIRY
Brain Function #3 - Create New Ideas
  • Take your research beyond knowledge and understanding.  Your child will apply, analyze, evaluate and synthesize as he works with information, through determined Inquiry work.
  • Her deep study brings her deep understanding.
  • He internalizes facts, concepts, skills, behavior so completely that they became part of him.

  C - CONTRIBUTION
Brain Function #4 - Act on Those Ideas
  • Give your child the opportunity to experiment with the information, think creatively, see new possibilities, and create new ideas.
  • She is now ready to make a contribution to the world around her.
This is the pattern of a true scholar, from the interest ignited by exposure to the purpose embodied by real contribution.  Learning is more than reading a book, answering questions and writing a paper.

Karen Kindrick Cox often shared what Howard Gardner points out: "intelligence is a problem-solving, product-producing capability."

True learning is engaging, comprehensive, far-reaching.

May your adventures this year be filled with the love of learning that sets your children on the EPIC path, the pattern of a scholar.
